Hansel
J. Hallman received a BA in Biological Aspects of Conservation from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002. After he moved to Portland,
OR, and subsequently worked as a climber and crew leader for a
professional tree maintenance service for two-and-a-half years, Hans
decided that he would like to merge his technical climbing skills with
his interest in botany. In July 2005, he completed a course in canopy
access techniques at the Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation
(ITEC),
in Bocas del Toro, Panama, with CSI Fellow Mr. Joe Maher of the Tree
Climber’s Coalition (TCC).
Hallman is now working on a post-baccalaureate degree in botany at
Oregon State University. His primary interests lie in the ecology of
tropical epiphyte communities and the challenges presented to
researchers’ access to, and study methods in, primary-growth or remote
forest canopies.
